    Inauguration of HKU-Oxford Partnership in Quantum Information and Computation

    Initiated by the Quantum Information and Computation Initiative of the Computer Science Department, HKU Faculty of Engineering, the quantum groups at the Computer Science Departments of The University of Hong Kong and the University of Oxford recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU consolidates a long-standing collaboration between the Oxford Quantum Group and the Quantum Information, Foundations, and Technologies Group at HKU to establish an "HKU-Oxford Joint Lab for Quantum Information and Computation".

    With the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus, the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering has deployed an innovative interactive platform based on internet technology and virtual reality (VR) to deliver online teaching and learning, in order to reduce contact among students.

    Entrance Scholarships by Standard Chartered Hong Kong 150th Anniversary Community Foundation for BASc(FinTech) students

    Supported by the Standard Chartered Hong Kong 150th Anniversary Community Foundation, a total of six “HKU-SCF FinTech Scholarships” will be offered to students of BASc (FinTech) programme starting from 2020-21 for five consecutive academic years. Each student will be awarded an entrance scholarship of HK$50,000.

    A new technology of 3D microscopy

    In collaboration with LKS Faculty of Medicine of HKU, Dr Kevin Tsia of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and his team developed a novel fluorescence imaging approach, called coded light-sheet array microscopy (CLAM), which allows complete parallelized 3D imaging without mechanical scanning. The flexible implementation of CLAM regarding both hardware and software ensures compatibility with any light-sheet imaging modality and could thus be instrumental in a multitude of areas in biological research.

    CAVE system to promote safety awareness in industrial training

    Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering and the Occupational Safety & Health Council co-developed a Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) system. The system applies VR technology on a 3D interface to create immersive virtual environments on a 4 meter x 4 meter dynamic platform. With the VR headsets, trainees can immerse into a real working environment to experience an accident safely in the system, so as to realise the importance of adhering to safety measures.

    The annual awards for research excellence under the Outstanding Researcher Awards Scheme and the Research Output Prize aim to recognise, honour and reward exceptional work in research by staff of the University. This year, engineering academics were being awarded in all the four categories.

    Research achievements recognised by the State Council of the PRC

    Congratulations to Professor James Lam of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for receiving State Natural Science Award (Second-class) for a project “Robust Control Theory and Methodologies for Time-delay Systems”. He was also awarded the Second-class Natural Science Award by Chinese Association of Automation (CAA) in 2019 for another project “Control Theory and Applications of Positive Systems”.
