n-Dimensional Blockchain Platform for ESG Reporting

Dr. Ray ZhongPrincipal Investigator: Dr Ray Y. Zhong (Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering)
Telephone: 3917-7966
Email: zhongzry@hku.hk

Project Objectives:

  • To evaluate fact level of ESG data and transfer data into the consortium blockchain via a fact-telling blockchain gateway;
  • To establish a consortium n-dimension blockchain platform for data sharing among different ESG report stakeholders;
  • To assess the consistency and transparency levels of ESG report in line with annual HKEx ESG reporting KPIs; and
  • To conduct some pilot studies in our industrial collaborators to test the proposed platform.

Project Description:

This project aims to innovate a suite of core technologies to form the foundation for developing a total solution to upgrade the ESG reporting industry. This project will focus on several key innovations: (1) a fact-telling blockchain gateway is developed to evaluate fact level of ESG data and to transfer data into the consortium blockchain; (2) a n-Dimension (nD) consortium blockchain is built for ESG data sharing among different ESG report stakeholders; (3) the versioning smart contract mechanism is proposed to assess the consistency of ESG report in line with annual HKEx ESG reporting KPIs.

Target Deliverables in 2022/23:

  • A fact-telling blockchain gateway to evaluate fact level of ESG data and transfer data into the consortium blockchain via;
  • A consortium n dimension blockchain platform for data sharing among different ESG report stakeholders; and
  • Two pilot studies in our industrial collaborators to test the proposed platform.

Smart Water Detectives: Use of IT and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to enhance awareness of water sustainability issues

 Dr Edith NgaiPrincipal Investigator: Dr Edith Ngai (Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering)
 Telephone: 3917-2675
 Email: chngai@eee.hku.hk

Project Objectives:

  • To use smart technologies to enhance water literacy of target beneficiaries and to induce individual and collective actions to protect and preserve our city’s water resources; and
  • To translate target beneficiaries’ heightened appreciation of the importance of achieving water sustainability goals, at both the local and the global scale, into measurable changes in attitudes and behaviours that pertain to their daily habits’ direct and indirect impacts on freshwater resources.

Project Description:

“Smart Water Detective” project aims to enhance secondary school students’ water literacy and understanding of key messages of water sustainability issues. By applying the technologies developed for the Smart Water Auditing for Sustainable Hong Kong (SWASH) research project to a school setting, students will learn about the know-how of a customized Internet-of-Things (IoT)-based device called the Smart Meter Analyser (SMAN) and data analysis techniques. Through collecting water usage data for their own schools, we are hoping to induce noteworthy changes in attitudes and behaviour towards water resources among secondary school students.

Target Deliverables in 2022/23:

  • A report on the KE outcomes and impacts achieved;
  • An impact case study based on the relevant template of the UGC’s Research Assessment Exercise (RAE);
  • Social media posts and/or posters;
  • A project website;
  • An article on the KE outcomes and impact in layman terms (in both English and Chinese) for distribution to the media; and
  • Records and photos of school talks seminars.

Encourage elderly and stroke patient to do exercise with AI mobile Apps

Dr Wilton Fok Principal Investigator: Dr Wilton Fok  (Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering)
 Telephone: 3917-8490
 Email: wtfok@eee.hku.hk

Project Objectives:

  • Encourage elderly to do more exercise for their better health by using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) mobile apps,
  • Introduce elderly to more types of exercise, and
  • Coaching elderly how to do exercise correctly and safely.

Project Description:

This project aims to encourage elderly to do more exercise for their health using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) mobile apps. The apps would encourage them to exercise more often, and also introduce them to more types of exercise, as well as how to do them correctly. Our core technology on human posture analysis will be used assess and record their exercise performance.  Promotion video will be provided. It is targeted that this impact project can attract seniors to do more exercise safely with help from AI, and enhance the body flexibility, cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular strength.

Target Deliverables in 2022/23:

  • An AI mobile App for coaching elderlies to do sport exercise,
  • Project kick off seminar for elderlies in Hong Kong,
  • A video for promoting the use of this mobile AI App,
  • Project dissemination seminar,
  • A project website, and
  • Media coverage in newspaper, radio and/or TV.
