HKU and Tohoku University signed agreement on collaborations in Transformative AI and Robotics Technologies

The University of Hong Kong signed an agreement with Tohoku University, Japan to collaborate on general academic exchange, as well as research of transformative artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technologies. The partnership will transform and upgrade AI and robotics technology with the outstanding research and academic achievements of the two universities. This collaboration is aimed at opening up new technologies for the transformation of the manufacturing industry and of mega cities.
HKU and Tencent Finance Academy (Hong Kong) signed MoU to connect and nurture young FinTech talent in Hong Kong

HKU signed a memorandum of understanding with Tencent Finance Academy (Hong Kong), under Tencent, to promote the development of FinTech in Hong Kong. By combining HKU’s outstanding academic foundation in FinTech with Tencent’s practical experience in the industry, the two parties will join hands in cultivating local FinTech talents and collaborating on FinTech-related research and development initiatives.
HKU and Ocean Park joined hands to strengthen collaboration on education and research programmes

HKU and Ocean Park joined hands in signing a memorandum of understanding which will see the two entities deepening their collaboration in innovative education and research initiatives. The Faculty of Engineering will work with the Park in organising a new Summer Adventure camp to help educate and develop secondary students’ interest in science.
Professor Norman Ko donated HK$10M to establish Ko Wong Wai Ching Wendy Professorship in Fluid Dynamics

The Faculty was delighted to receive a donation of HK$10M by Professor Norman Ko Wah-man to establish Ko Wong Wai Ching Wendy Professorship in Fluid Dynamics. An inauguration of the endowed professorship was held on March 20, 2019.
Computer Science Department showcased projects to Mrs Carrie Lam at HKU x Cyberport FinTech Nucleus

Mrs Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive, and Dr George Lam, Chairman of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, visited HKU x Cyberport FinTech Nucleus at Cyberport’s Smart Space FinTech on February 22, 2019. Among the showcased projects, HKU SHIELD and Brain Investing Limited were developed by staff and alumnus of the Faculty of Engineering.

Dr Luo Ruibang and Professor Lam Tak-wah of Department of Computer Science and their team published a paper entitled “A multi-task convolutional deep neural network for variant calling in single molecule sequencing” in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.

Congratulations to Dr Jiang Lijun of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering for elevating as Fellow in Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES).
Project “Robocoach”by a MSc student team awarded the Cyberport Creative Micro Fund for AI motion video analysis

Robocoach, an AI motion video analysis project developed by a MSc student team of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, was awarded the Cyberport Creative Micro Fund (CCMF). A seed funding of HK$100,000 was awarded to the team for setting up a startup and prototype development.
