The sewage monitoring technology developed by the HKU multidisciplinary team led by Professor Zhang Tong of the Department of Civil Engineering has been incorporated as one of the key components of the control strategy for fighting against COVID-19 since the fourth wave of epidemic outbreaks.
In light of the emerging highly transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variants worldwide such as Beta variant (known as B.1.351, first identified in South Africa) and Delta (Indian) variant the multidisciplinary team had developed the new sewage testing method.
