HKU-Cambridge Joint Recruitment Scheme

The “HKU-Cambridge Joint Recruitment Scheme” is offered jointly by The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the University of Cambridge (Cambridge) for BEng students of HKU, such that selected students can gain 3 degrees upon successful completion of 5 years of studies at both HKU and Cambridge. 

The Scheme 

Under the “HKU-Cambridge Joint Recruitment Scheme”, selected BEng students will study the first two years at HKU, and continue their studies at Cambridge for their third to fifth year of studies. Upon successful completion of the five years of studies, students will be conferred the Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degrees by Cambridge, and the Bachelor of Engineering degree by HKU. 

Quota and Selection Criteria 

As the “HKU-Cambridge Joint Recruitment Scheme” is a competitive scheme for high calibre students with excellent academic credentials, the number of selected students for each cohort will not normally exceed 10. Students will be evaluated on their English proficiency as well as Science and Mathematics knowledge. 

Programmes at Cambridge 

Students may pursue either path for their Cambridge studies: 

  • Computer Science; or
  • Engineering, including:
    • Aerospace and Aerothermal Engineering
    • Bioengineering
    • Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering
    • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
    • Electrical and Information Sciences
    • Energy, Sustainability and the Environment
    • Information and Computer Engineering
    • Instrumentation and Control
    • Mechanical Engineering


All first year students reading for the BEng, BEng in Biomedical Engineering and BEng in Engineering Science admitted to the Faculty of Engineering in the academic year 2018-19 are eligible to apply.

Screening Test

The Screening Test will be held in the afternoon of Saturday, September 15, 2018, at CPD-LG.07-10. It will mainly test the students’ science and mathematics knowledge, and will be of a duration of 2 hours.

Students who perform excellently in the Screening Test will be shortlisted for interview, which will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

UCAS Application

Shortlisted students are required to apply for admissions to Cambridge via UCAS by October 15, 2018, 6:00pm (UK time), for deferred entry to Cambridge in 2020. Details on the application will be provided to shortlisted students in due course.

Pre-interview Assessment

Shortlisted students aspiring to study Engineering at Cambridge will have to attend a pre-interview assessment to be held on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at HKU.

Overseas Mathematics Assessment

Shortlisted students aspiring to study Computer Science at Cambridge will have to attend an overseas Mathematics assessment in the week of November 5 to 9, 2018, at HKU.


All shortlisted students under the Scheme will have to attend an admissions interview chaired by senior member(s) of the University of Cambridge on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

Conditional and Firm Offers

After the interview held in November, students selected for the Scheme will be given a conditional offer in January 2019. Upon satisfying the requirements as stipulated in the conditional offer letter by the end of the student’s second year of studies (June 2020), he or she will be given a firm offer to study at Cambridge from October 2020.

Academic Advising

Academic Advising sessions on applications to Cambridge will be offered to shortlisted students after the Screening Test.

2: For students who do not have Right of Abode in Hong Kong and require a student visa to study at HKU


  • Student may apply for scholarships sponsored by Cambridge Overseas Trust.
  • Students may apply for scholarships by the Colleges of Cambridge. 
  • The highest amount is normally sufficient to cover tuition, college fees and living expenses.

Curriculum Structure

Selected students complete research internship and capstone experience at HKU in the summer of their third and fourth year of studies. Details will be provided to selected students in due course.

Confidentiality of Assessment

Each student registered for the selection of the Scheme has to sign an undertaking that he or she will not disclose any content of the screening tests, assessments and interview to another person without the written consent of the Faculty of Engineering, HKU and the Department of Engineering, Cambridge. Violation of the confidentiality undertaking will result in disqualification of the application.
