Professor Jitendra Malik, Arthur J. Chick Professor of EECS at UC Berkeley and VP of Robotics Research at FAIR, Meta Inc. delivered the William Mong Distinguished Lecture titled “When Will We Have Intelligent Robots?” on March 26, 2025. The lecture received overwhelming response with over 200 participants online and onsite, and was facilitated by Professor Yizhou Yu of the Department of Computer Science, School of Computing and Data Science.
During the lecture, Professor Malik delved into critical pillars of intelligent robotics: locomotion, navigation, and manipulation. He presented pioneering research on locomotion, showcasing humanoid robots capable of traversing diverse and challenging terrains. He also introduced the innovative navigation system, which enables robots to locate objects unfamiliar environments. For manipulation, he highlighted dexterous tasks achieved through reinforcement learning and sim-to-real transfer, and discussed the role of multimodal perception in further advancing robotic capabilities.
