Professor Kaibin Huang's research project on Launching 6G AI Services from Space awarded funding support in NSFC/RGC Collaborative Research Scheme

Jan 26, 2025

A team of researchers at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), led by Professor Kaibin Huang, has formed a partnership with another team from the State Key Lab of Integrated Services Networks at Xidian University, led by its director Professor Min Sheng. They aim to develop AI technologies for deployment in the 6G space-ground integrated networks to cover remote, underdeveloped regions. At the core of this project is a novel technology named Space-ground Fluid AI, which will be capable of coping with fast-changing satellite-network topology and limited capacities of space-ground links to realize reliable and ubiquitous AI services delivered to every corner of Earth. The research will leverage the on-orbit satellite, “Xidian No. 1”, and China’s first 10,000-satellite emulation platform developed by the Xidian team.

The project secured over HK$3.5 million funding support from the highly competitive National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Research Grants Council (NSFC/RGC)’s Collaborative Research Scheme (CRS) 2024/25 Exercise. The CRS initiative is established to promote large-scale collaborative research across disciplines and universities in Mainland China and Hong Kong, aiming to enhance research output and impact on both sides.
