The fourth COVID-19 Engineering Lecture Series “Behaviour Analysis of MTR passengers during COVID-19: A Data Driven Approach” was organised on June 28, 2021 by Professor Reynold C.K. Cheng of Department of Computer Science. The talk was facilitated by Professor S.C. Wong Associate Dean (Development and External Relations).
Coronavirus is highly infectious and dangerous; infected cases are contagious well before symptom onset, and continue to be contagious for about one more week afterwards. Transmission of COVID-19 during transportation can be one of the potential sources of spreading the virus. What role does transportation play in the spread of COVID-19? How does the pandemic affect the anxiety and the choices of the passengers? How are travel patterns affected by the shutdown of a railway station? Answering these questions can lead to a better understanding of the interaction between transportation and coronavirus spread, so as to make us more aware of the infection risks in different transportation tools, and help policy makers to make better prevention and control strategies. During the talk, Professor Cheng discussed the recent progress of addressing the above problems, with a data-driven approach on the traveling records of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR) passengers. He also discussed the development of a novel data analysis system customised for analyzing the relationship between MTR passengers and COVID-19 cases.
The next COVID-19 Engineering Lecture Series “Ultrasonic disinfection of personal protective equipment for environmental sustainability” will be conducted on September 8, 2021.
