Students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering received awards from HKIE
The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) conducted The Innovation Award and Enginpreneurs Award presentation ceremony on June 13, 2021. On the day, three Mechanical Engineering student projects were awarded.
The HKIE Innovation Award 2021 (Young Member Group)
Grand Prize (Category I - An Invention)
Project title: “SNAPP” – The Search and Rescue (SAR) robotic fish
Executive Committee: Muhammad Saad Shahid Anwel (President) (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Taha Abid, Le Chi Lim, Pawan Raskoti
Project supervisor: Dr Zhang Fu
The “SNAPP” robotic fish currently holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest 50m swim by a robotic fish in 22.92s or at 2.18 m/s (meters per second). With their previous success, the team is now turning its goal to solve real-world problems such as data collection for marine exploration and pollution monitoring. It can be used to collect water data such as temperature, pH, etc. and also for real-time mapping and monitoring of specimens in the environment such as coral reefs, microplastics, etc.

Champion:
Project title: Micro-hydropower system by domestic sewage in buildings
Project member: Cheung Ho Chi (Department of Mechanical Engineering)
The project is an idea to use the potential energy of domestic sewage to generate electricity. As skyscrapers are everywhere in Hong Kong, engineers can collect domestic sewage from each floor. In Hong Kong, Drainage Service Department has to deal with 2,800,000 cubic meters of sewage every day according to the data in 2017-2018. We can use these large amounts of water to generate power. To utilize these wasted potential energies, micro-hydropower generators can be installed on the ground floor.

1st runner up:
Project title: A Solar Power System for Producing Useful Fuels and Chemicals from Waste Materials
Team members: Leung Hoi Yan Macy (Leader), Wong Lut Sam Serena, Chan Yat Fung Ivan (Department of Mechanical Engineering)
Project supervisor: Professor Dennis Y.C. Leung
The project is to design an innovative solar power system with a solar tracking system and solar power supply system, which comprises the concepts of applying solar energy and waste-to-energy, to convert biomass waste materials to char products, namely charcoal, biochar and activated carbon through pyrolysis.
Remarks: The team also received the InnoShow Award on the forth Engineering InnoShow organised by Innovation Academy.
