With the aim to attract and cultivate innovative ideas among students, scholars, researchers and industry leaders, the Innovation Academy has organized different kinds of activities and events for students. In February and March 2021, the first “InnoSpark” and “InnoEdge” event was organized.
Here is the highlights for the event:
InnoSpark
InnoSpark is a project pitching event for students to present their project ideas and recruit prospective teammates and academic advisors to form student interest groups on a wide range of topics like robotics, artificial intelligence, electric automobiles and healthcare technologies.
The first InnoSpark competition was organised on February 23, 2021. The competitionwas well received 32innovative proposals and among that 10 proposals were submitted from the InnoHub members. The themes of the proposals are related to the themes like smart technology for better living, innovations in the post-pandemic world, human-computer integration and interactions and other technology-related projects. Eight of the projects were shortlisted for pitching their ideas at the event. Finally, the judging panel had selected four projects as winniers.

The project “SNAPP the SAR Fish” also won the Best Presenter awards.

InnoEdge
The first InnoEdge “Recent advances in computer vision and applications” was conducted on March 5, 2021 by Dr Kenneth Wong, Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science. The talk was moderated by Professor Giulio Chiribella of the Department of Computer Science. During the sharing, Dr Wong had introduced some representative methods for a number of vision tasks, including image classification, object detection, scene reconstruction, and image synthesis.
InnoEdge creates opportunities for active exchange and learning for the advanced technologies and/or research outcomes from pioneering Engineering projects in the Faculty of Engineering. It is an innovative and multidisciplinary programme for bringing together like-minded students in an active peer learning community where they can delve into diverse topics pertinent to the use of cutting-edge technologies.The next InnoEdge will be scheduled in April, 2021.
