The world has witnessed an immense advance in digital currencies in recent years. This disruptive innovation defines new ways in which financial activities can be carried out using digital technologies. The market is responding to the reality that digital currencies, either privately or central bank issued, will be an unavoidable part of the global monetary system. With the support from the Department of Computer Science, the HKU-SCF FinTech Academy organised a workshop series with a theme “Digital Currency: Technology, Challenges and Opportunities” on August 27, 2020. The workshop aims to focus on the technologies underneath digital currencies and explore the challenges and opportunities presented by digital currencies adoption. Established academics from The University of Hong Kong, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, MIT and Cyberport were invited to exchange their insights with the industries on the implications of digital currencies. It also served as a discussions platform on how the existing frameworks from the perspective of law, business and technology can be extended to incorporate this new technology-enabled development.
