Professor David Simchi-Levi, Professor of Engineering Systems at MIT and Chairman of OPS Rules Management Consultants, an operations consulting company, gave a lecture on January 3, 2014 titled “OM Research: From Problem Driven to Data Driven Research” at Theatre A, Chow Yei Ching Building.
Increased computing power and the explosion of data are changing the way organizations capture data, analyze information and make decisions. These changes provide opportunities for the operations management community to analyze extensive data so as to identify new models that drive decisions and actions. But connecting the realms of data, models and decisions will require our community to move out of our comfort zone and address intellectual challenges that demand bringing together statistics, computational science and operations research techniques. In this talk, Professor Simchi-Levi presented his view on these opportunities and challenges.
