The University conferred honorary degrees upon seven outstanding individuals at the 204th Congregation on April 14, 2021 in Loke Yew Hall. Among the seven outstanding individuals, Professor Hu Chenming, “Father of the 3D Transistor”, was conferred “Doctor of Science honoris causa” by the University in recognition of his valuable contributions to the world or to humanity, and also to those who have made significant contributions to academia, Hong Kong or the University.
Professor Hu is an electronics engineer, TSMC Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of California (UC), Berkeley. He had visited our Faculty and delivered a William Mong Distinguished Lecture entitled "Semiconductor - World Impact and Future Prospect" in 2019.
Professor Hu’s pioneering achievements in the development of Fin Field-effect Transistor (FinFET) technology in 1999 were regarded as the most radical shift in semiconductor technology in over fifty years. By 2015 all top servers, computers, Android and iOS phones were using FinFET processors.
