WYNG Foundation and Mr Leslie Chung have pledged a donation to set up a research centre which focuses on water technology and policy. The Centre will be jointly operated by the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Social Sciences. The proposed research centre, subject to the approval from the Council, is expected to become a focal point for promoting research excellence in the area of water science, technology and water policy that are important for Hong Kong. It is expected that teaching and training activities on water technology and water policy will be arranged to the university students and local professionals. In addition, its research findings on water technology and water policy issues will be disseminated to the public and the government to benefit the Hong Kong community.
A meeting with donor representatives was held in October 2017 where Professor X.Y. Li of Faculty of Engineering and Dr Frederick Lee from Faculty of Social Sciences, presented to the representatives from WYNG Foundation and Philomathia Foundation about the expected deliverables in terms of research, teaching, knowledge exchange and impact to the society of the research centre.
Dr Anthony Ng of WYNG Foundation hoped that the “3I+I” strategic direction of The University of Hong Kong, namely Internationalisation, Innovation, Interdisciplinarity and Impact, could be further upheld by the establishment of the research centre.

Professor Norman Tien, Dean of Engineering, appreciated the generosity of the donors to support the University and this Centre. He added that this joint collaboration of both Facilities is an exemplar of inter-disciplinary collaboration at the University and will make a significant impact to the society at large.

The Faculty also appreciates the generosity of the Pacific Industries Limited which made a donation of HK$500,000 to the Department of Computer Science in support of their research and/or educational activities; innovation and experiential learning activities.
Cheque presentation ceremony in recognition of the generous donation from Pacific Industries Limited
A cheque presentation ceremony was held on October 21, 2017 followed by laboratory visits and meeting where academia and industry exchanged their state-of-the-art research endeavours and ideas. Mr Erik Chan, Managing Director of Pacific Industries Limited, said that a close relationship between the Faculty and industry is very crucial for both to share the cutting-edge research findings and technical knowledge with each other. It was hoped that practical solutions could be devised for the benefit of the community.
