The Programme

The Bachelor of Engineering in Engineering Science [BEng(EngSc)] degree aims at providing students a comprehensive engineering programme and equip them with multi-disciplinary knowledge and skills in engineering and other non-technical field. Under the flexible curriculum structure, students will receive solid technical training in an engineering field and develop a broad range of skills in other disciplines. The programme is a timely initiative in response to the ever-changing needs of the world.

Programme Structure

The BEng(EngSc) programme adopts a major/minor structure in which students can select one of the below areas as major option, and pursue second major in one of the remaining four majors of BEng(EngSc), or other second major and minor options offered by other faculties.

  • Healthcare Engineering (offered in 2021-22 intake and thereafter. Retitled from Biomedical Engineering)

HKU Biomedical EngineeringHealthcare Engineering

This major is jointly offered by the Faculties of Engineering and Medicine. Students will acquire the cutting edge knowledge and skills in healthcare engineering, medical imaging, life science, medical devices and cell/tissue engineering, and be well-prepared for careers in the emerging field of life science and biomedical engineering, as well as research postgraduate study in healthcare engineering.

HKU ComputingComputing & Data Analytics (last offered in 2018-19 intake)

This major is jointly offered by the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science of the Faculty of Science. Students will acquire fundamental knowledge in computer programming and database management as well as statistical analysis, and select advanced courses in the field of statistics and actuarial science, to equip themselves to be experts in the fields of computer science and actuarial science.

Energy EngineeringEnergy Engineering

The limited resources of the earth and the implications of a series of energy crisis propel mankind to seriously think about the proper and efficient utilization of world energy. Specialists in the technology on sustainable and renewable energy are highly sought all over the world and this programme is best in nurturing experts in the exploration and development of renewable energy. This major is jointly offered by the Departments of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, which enables students to acquire the knowledge in various categories of renewable energy, energy technology, power system, electric vehicle, building services and electrical system for mass transportation.

Environmental EngineeringEnvironmental Engineering

With the increasing importance of environmental protection and conservation, engineers with high consciousness in environment are in high demand to provide solutions for engineering projects that will have positive impact on the world environment. This major is jointly offered by the Departments of Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Students will have the opportunity to study foundation engineering subjects and advanced courses in hydrology, waste management, renewable energy and pollution control.

Materials EngineeringMaterials Engineering

Materials Engineering is an emerging discipline focusing on the innovation and application of new materials in the high technology sector, like nanotechnology, in the medical, optical or aeronautical field, for the betterment of mankind. This major is jointly offered by the Departments of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Students will get the chance to acquire top-notch knowledge in mechanics, nanotechnology, biomaterials, optical network technology, aeronautical engineering and medical devices.

Systems AnalyticsSystems Analytics

This major is offered by the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering. It not only inherits traditional strengths of Industrial and Systems Engineering on process and operations analytics, but also extends to incorporate latest technologies including IoT, Digital Twin, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Data and Decision Analytics. Besides, students will have tremendous flexibility to choose courses offered by other departments and faculties in the university. Graduates from Systems Analytics major would make impactful contributions in application areas of multiple disciplines including processes and operations of manufacturing and logistics systems, service systems, healthcare service systems and financial systems.
