Junior Year Programme in English (JYPE)

Third year B.Eng. students who are interested in research can join the Junior Year Programme in English (JYPE) offered by Tohoku University, for one or two semesters.

The core course (required) of JYPE is the Individual Research Training (IRT) course, where students will carry out research, with the support of research groups to which the students are assigned to, on a current topic that is related to their field of studies. The programme also offers courses on Japanese language, culture, and society aimed at promotion of understanding of Japanese language and social customs.

The next intake of JYPE is October 2020, in which students can study for the fall semester (October 2020 – March 2021), or a whole academic year (October 2020 – September 2021).  The main purpose of JYPE is to provide an opportunity for overseas students to study scienceengineering, and agriculture courses at Tohoku University, without having to attain the Japanese language proficiency that would otherwise be necessary for those opting for the same courses in Japanese. All lectures are given in English and course credits can be transferred to participating students’ HKU studies subject to the Faculty’s prior approval.

The following departments at Tohoku University offer courses in English under JYPE:

  • Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
  • Electrical, Information and Physics Engineering
  • Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biomolecular Engineering
  • Material Science and Engineering
  • Civil Engineering and Architecture

Application Procedures and Timeline
