Designing computers that are aware of security threats

William Mong Distinguished Lecture by Professor Ruby B. Lee
Jun 14, 2016

Professor Ruby B. Lee, Forrest G. Hamrick Professor in Engineering, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Affiliated faculty, Computer Science, Princeton University, gave a lecture on June 14, 2016 titled “Designing computers that are aware of security threats”.

Cyber attacks escalate while our dependence on cyber space increases. However, the computers that power cyber space have not been designed with security threats in mind.  Can security awareness be built into the basic design of future computing devices? Since software security solutions have been vulnerable to attacks, can hardware architecture also be enlisted to help improve cyber security?  How can cloud computers, smart phones and IoT (Internet of Things) systems be designed to thwart attacks? How can we build security in, without sacrificing performance or usability? Designing computer architectures that are security-aware is one of the most exciting challenges today and one that is critically important for our interconnected world.
