Awarded to research into electrochemical actuation of nanoporous materials

May 1, 2015

Dr. Chuan Cheng, a Postdoctoral Fellow and a 2013 PhD graduate at Prof. Alfonso H. W. Ngan’s research group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. He is awarded the unusual maximum fellowship period of 24 months, to carry out research on electrochemical actuation of nanoporous materials, beginning from May, 2015. (For details, please refer to here.)

The Humboldt Foundation grants highly qualified and early-stage researchers from abroad to conduct long-term (6-24 months) research projects as Humboldt Research Fellows. Fellowships and awards from the Humboldt Foundation are considered to be among the most prestigious and generous awards in Germany. More than 50 Humboldt Foundation alumni are Nobel laureates.

After obtaining his PhD from HKU, Dr. Cheng also received the Outstanding Postgraduate Student Award from the University, the Norman W. M. Ko Ph.D. Prize from the Faculty of Engineering, and the Best Thesis Award from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
