HKIE Gold Medal awarded to Professor Norman Ko Wah-Man

Congratulations to Professor Norman Ko Wah-Man, for receiving the prestigious HKIE Gold Medal 2021 award from The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions to the society and the engineering profession. Professor Ko is a distinguished alumnus of HKU Faculty of Engineering, graduating in 1963. He received the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Southampton in 1969, and was awarded Doctor of Science degrees from HKU and the University of Southampton, in 1995 and 2004 respectively. Professor Ko was conferred Honorary University Fellowship in 2007 by HKU, in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong and academia.

Professor Ko is a world-renowned expert in fluid dynamics and acoustics, and a pioneer in the control of noise pollution in Hong Kong. He was a chair professor and previous head of the HKU Mechanical Engineering Department.  Professor Ko has published extensively and internationally until his retirement in 2000. He is currently a HKU Emeritus Professor and also an honorary professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department. With the donation from Professor Ko we have established the Ko Wong Wai Ching Wendy Professorship in Fluid Dynamics in 2019.

Professor Ko is not only an internationally-renowned scholar, he is also well known through his reputation as an artist, and many of his creative sculptures can be found throughout the territory, in addition to his numerous exhibitions in fine art and sculptures. Professor Ko has received many awards for his art works since the 1980s, and is a founding member of the Hong Kong Sculptors Association, the first local group of its kind.
