Professor Hui Cao, Professor of John C. Malone Professor of Applied Physics and of Physics, and a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Yale University, delivered a distinguished lecture titled “Harnessing Disorder for Photonic Applications” on March 11, 2021. The talk was facilitated by Professor Kenneth K.Y. Wong (Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering).

In the lecture, Professor Cao shared that disorder and complexity can be harnessed for photonic applications, in particular, to provide unique functionalities of photonic devices. Her team recently developed an on-chip random spectrometer that combines high resolution with small footprint. In addition, we incorporated disorder to a laser to reduce the spatial coherence for free-speckle full-field imaging.
