Volunteer service at St. Barnabas’ Society and Home

In collaboration with St. Barnabas’ Society and Home (SBSH) Community, Project Mingde organised volunteer work for students and encouraged them to join from time to time. Dickson Lui, a Civil Engineering student, remarked, “We can volunteer in SBSH to make some contribution to the community, such as distributing daily necessities to the poor living in tiny cramped partitioned flats in Sai Wan. This makes students realise the severity of urban blight in Hong Kong and the importance of social responsibility”. The SBSH centre also provided a much-needed venue to host various community activities for children, the disabled and the elderly in the Western District. Engineering students in the Project Mingde Student Association had been participating in these meaningful volunteering works since the beginning of the collaboration with SBSH.

“This SBSH project is a great platform for Civil Engineering students to work collaboratively with students and teachers from other disciplines”, commented Dr Alex Lau of the Department of Civil Engineering, “We will continue to achieve all our objectives and have built a good working relationship with SBSH. Therefore, it provides a valuable long-term opportunity for our students to participate in diverse interdisciplinary experiential learning activities”.
