Team Virtus of The University of Hong Kong took the Second Runner-up in the Robocon 2017 Hong Kong Contest

Jun 18, 2017

Team Virtus of The University of Hong Kong took the Second Runner-up in the Robocon 2017 Hong Kong Contest held on 18 June 2017.

A total of 12 teams from 6 tertiary institutions entered the Hong Kong Contest.  The names of our two teams are Team Sapientia and Team Virtus, taken from the Latin motto of our university.  Team members come from the departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, and Computer Science.

The theme and game rules can be found in the ABU Robocon web site: www.aburobocon.net

The objective is to land frisbees onto the landing platforms in the game field to gain points.  Any team that places at least one frisbee onto each of the seven landing platforms wins the game outright.

In the Preliminary Rounds, Team Virtus met the teams from City U and IVE, and Team Sapientia met those from CUHK and City U.  Both teams proceeded to Quarter-finals.

Footage can be viewed from the following link:

The other team of HKUST lost to Poly U in the Semi-finals, so we met in Third Fight.  We are on the Red side.  This team of HKUST used a pneumatic-powered catapult to throw stacks of three frisbees.  One can see in the footage that they have a huge bank of pneumatic accumulators.  We beat them and took the Second Runner-up.

Through participating in Robocon, students applied their knowledge in a competitive environment.  They also developed practical skills in machining, assembly, circuit design, circuit fabrication, and programming.  The experiential learning process that they gone through is indeed invaluable.

Support from Faculty of Engineering is always gratefully acknowledged.
