BEng in Civil Engineering

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil Engineering is the art and science of utilizing natural resources and power for the beneficial use of mankind. Civil Engineers are responsible for the design, construction and safe-keeping of our infrastructure and built environment. They ensure that our buildings, roads and bridges are safe and effective, our stormwater drainage systems are adequate to prevent flooding, our wastewater are collected and treated properly to protect our environment, and all components of our infrastructure are functioning in a safe, comfortable and sustainable manner.

The 4-year Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering (CivE) provides students with the academic qualification towards the professional status of a Civil Engineer. Students also have the option to take various Minor programmes from within or outside of the Faculty of Engineering. In the CivE programme, students will learn and acquire the required knowledge in the following areas, in addition to various common core and language courses:

  1. Background mathematics and applied science courses including structural mechanics, fluid mechanics, material science and environmental studies
  2. Structural engineering courses, e.g., analysis and design of concrete and steel structures
  3. Geotechnical engineering courses, e.g., engineering geology, solid mechanics, foundation design
  4. Hydraulic and hydrology courses, e.g., water cycle, flows in ducts and channels
  5. Environmental engineering courses, e.g., wastewater treatment, solid waste management
  6. Construction management courses
  7. Transportation engineering courses
  8. Discipline group projects, Individual Final Year Projects and Capstone Design Projects

The BEng(CivE) programme is fully accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Honour degree graduates meet the academic requirements for corporate membership of HKIE. Most of our graduates become corporate members of HKIE and obtain the status of Registered Professional Engineer after three or more years of approved working experience.

Our graduates have been contributing to the design, construction and safe-keeping of the impressive infrastructure in Hong Kong as well as in other places of the world.

Most of our graduates are employed by works departments in the Hong Kong Government, engineering consultant firms and construction companies. They work on all types of infrastructure development projects; such as those related to highways projects, transportation-related projects, building projects, water supply projects, drainage and flood prevention projects, environmental engineering and pollution control projects. The main government departments employing our graduates include Architectural Services Department, Buildings Department, Civil Engineering and Development Department, Drainage Services Department, Environmental Protection Department, Housing Department, Highways Department and Water Supplies Department.

In the past few decades, Hong Kong has been putting in enormous resources to infrastructure development and this trend is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. The employment prospects of our Honour degree graduates have been very good and most of them have managed to secure more than one offer of a civil engineer trainee position. Many of our past graduates are holding leading engineering positions in the Government and large engineering consulting and construction companies.
