Commencing from 2014-15, a quota of 140 (subject to review and possible adjustment from year to year) is imposed on BEng programmes offered by each department of the Faculty of Engineering. Students will choose their desired study programme after their first year of studies; if a particular programme has more applicants than the quota, students will be selected based on their academic performance.
Directly admits students into its first year, and there is a quota of 20.

Over 99% of students could get into their first or second choice of their desired programme.
In addition to the University entrance requirements, applicants with Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Examination (HKDSE) qualification shall satisfy the following requirements:

Yes. The Faculty Interview for JUPAS candidates will tentatively be scheduled for the week of June 6 – 9, 2017, after the HKDSE examinations. Only candidates who place BEng or BEng(EngSc) as one of their Band A programme choices will be invited for interview.
(Non-JUPAS applicants will be considered on the basis of individual merit.)
The fast-track system for 2017 admissions is introduced to enable earlier processing of applications from local non-JUPAS and overseas applicants.
CCandidates may choose to apply for fast-track admissions if they have exceptionally good academic results / other achievements, and have decided that HKU is their first choice into the university.
Deadline for fast-track admissions: 12:00 noon, November 16, 2016 (Hong Kong Time)
Under the fast-track, offers will be made from November 2016 onwards. Candidates will have two weeks to consider the offer of admission and they are required to pay a deposit of HK$10,000 to confirm the place.
If these candidates have not been given an offer or shortlisted for a place under fast-track, their application will be considered further under the main round.
His / her application will be forwarded to his / her second / third programme choice for consideration.
The following admissions results serves as reference only, as the number of non-JUPAS candidates admitted varies year from year. Candidates achieved the following results would have a better chance for admissions:
|Examinations / Qualifications||Result|
|GCE-A Level||at least 3As, in which two grade As must be in Physics and Further Mathematics/Mathematics (not including any language subjects in English / Chinese)|
|IB||Total score of 36, in which 6 or above in Higher level Mathematics and Higher level Physics be required|
|AD / HD holder||Cumulative GPA > 3.3|
Local non-JUPAS candidates are required to fulfill one of the following English Requirements:
|Examinations / Qualifications||Result|
|HKALE||Grade D or above in AS level Use of English|
|HKCEE||Level 3 or above in English Language|
|HKDSE||Level 3 or better in English Language|
|IELTS||An overall band of 6.5 or better|
|TOEFL||A score of 583 or better in the paper-based (93 for internet-based)|
Students can apply for advanced standing credits for courses they have studied before admission to HKU, subject to the approval of the Faculty on recommendation of respective offering departments and the University (for Language Enhancement and Common Core Curriculum Courses). Students can formally apply to the Faculty Office for advanced standing credits upon admission to the BEng degree.
Associate Degree (AD) or Higher Diploma (HD) graduates from community colleges or Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) under VTC, who completed recognised full-time AD or HD programmes in community colleges in Hong Kong in an engineering discipline which should be of at least two years in duration, can apply for admissions to the third year of BEng programmes via the Direct Admissions Scheme to Senior Year Places. Final-year students on such programmes can also apply and their applications will be considered subject to their completion of the programme by August 2017.
AD or HD graduates are allowed to choose up to 5 programmes with senior year places. If you are also interested in admissions to the first year under the four-year curriculum, you can include first-year programmes among your programme choices. For first-year programmes, your application will be considered together with other applicants from the Non-JUPAS scheme.
AD or HD graduates admitted to either first or third year of BEng programmes may be granted advanced standing credits from your previous education to shorten the length of time or reduce the credits required for graduation.
Candidates with CGPA at least 3.6 will have a better chance to be admitted to the third year of BEng curriculum.
Based on the Graduate Employment Survey (no. of respondents: 387) conducted by CEDARS, the career prospects of 2015 graduates of BEng students are as follows:
Internship is compulsory for most of the BEng students (except ME and EngSc). Students will have to attend six to eight weeks immersed in the industry to gain valuable working experience and skills in the summer after their third year of studies.
No. BEng students will have to apply for internship places as posted by companies and departments of the HKSAR government by themselves. The departments may coordinate in the announcement of posting information but students may have to prepare for their application for internship places, which is similar to applying for jobs.
The Faculty has established a two-tier Academic Advising System to facilitate students’ study by offering advice to students on course selection, programme selection and career planning. During their study in the Faculty, students can seek advice and help from First Year Advisers and Academic Advisers.
Besides the Academic Advising System, the Faculty also organizes induction programmes to introduce the curriculum structure of BEng programmes to new students right after their registration, and briefing sessions to facilitate students in choosing their desired study programme after the common year. Moreover, sharing sessions by recent graduates that give first year students an overview of different engineering disciplines and industries will be organised throughout the year.
