Robotics researchers meeting guests from Greater China

Aug 31, 2015

Chinese Association of Science and Technology

On August 18, 2015, a delegation led by Dr. Shang Yong (尚勇), Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Secretary (中國科協常務副主席、書記處第一書記) of the Chinese Association of Science and Technology (中國科學技術協會) visited the Advanced Robotics Laboratory. On behalf of the President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Holliday greeted the guests. The delegates were especially interested in the new robotics research undertaking in the University, ranging from soft robotics, surgical robotics, new actuation system, virtual reality and robots in logistics. After a brief introduction by the Dean, researchers included Dr. Zheng Wang, Dr. Ka-Wai Kwok, Dr. Michael Chen, Dr. Chris Roberts, Dr. Jia Pan and Ms. Yaqi Dai (a research staff in Dr. Henry’s Lau’s team) and two students, Mr. Johnny Lin (MSc) and Mr. Tommy Hu (Undergraduate), gave their presentations followed by a live demonstration of the HKU Robot Atlas.

The visitors were very impressed by our on-going efforts focused on new areas of robotics and the talent pool built up in the recent years. CAST looked forward to forging a closer collaboration in this research area between institutions in Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau. With great interest in the imseCAVE, another visit to the IMSE laboratory was arranged in late August.

O Fundo para o Desenvolvimento das Ciências e da Tecnologia (FDCT)

Immediately on the next day, August 19, 2015, over 30 members of O Fundo para o Desenvolvimento das Ciências e da Tecnologia (FDCT) (澳門科學技術發展基金) and Dr. Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation (SHMDF) visited the Advanced Robotics Laboratory. The FDCT advises the Chief Executive of Macau in providing research funding support to universities and institutions in Macau. The visiting group includes Mr. Lau Si Io (劉仕堯先生), Adviser to the Chief Executive's Office, Macau, Dr. Ma Chi Ngai Frederico (馬志毅博士), Chairman of the Executive Committee of FDCT, Mr. Patrick Huen (禤永明先生), Chairman of the SHMDF Board, Prof. C K TONG (科技委員會科普工作組召集人), Prof. Zhi-Hong Jiang, Assistant Vice President of Macau University of Science and Technology, and many more from the industry and education sectors. Researchers giving presentations included Dr. Zheng Wang, Dr. Michael Chen, Dr. Henry Lau, Dr. Chris Roberts, Dr. Jia Pan, Ms Yaqi Dai, Ms. Ziyan Guo (a PhD student of Dr. Ka-Wai Kwok’s team) and an undergraduate final-year student, Mr. Tommy Hu. Dr Chris Roberts led several research staff and students to demonstrate the humanoid robot Atlas to the guests.

The presentations have given an overview about our work in robotics research and paved the way for potential collaboration between the two regions in the future.
