Tri-party collaboration on upper torso humanoid

The research team of Dr. Yong Hua Chen, Prof. James Lam and Dr. Michael Z. Q. Chen from Department of Mechanical Engineering has been awarded a major ITF project worth HK$8 million entitled Upper Torso Humanoid Robot with Highly Compliant Arms (UIM/268).

The primary objective of this project is to develop an upper torso humanoid robot with highly compliant arms so that it can be used in both service (such as supermarkets, health care centers) and manufacturing industries (e.g., quality control operations). A stereo vision system will be developed and installed to the head mannequin of the humanoid for basic object recognition and navigation. The pace of automation in manufacturing and service industries has accelerated in both China and elsewhere. The developed system will be easily customized to perform jobs that have been traditionally done by human operators, thus greatly increase the competitiveness and efficiency of industries. The developed system will also be used as a basic platform to test new concepts and findings in cognitive science and human/machine interactions.

Robot
The Baxtor robot was modified as a test platform for the proposed project
