ITB Secretary meeting our researchers

On November 11, 2015, Mr. Nicholas Yang, JP, the newly appointed Secretary for Innovation and Technology, visited the Faculty to understand how the University drives innovative and impactful research and to learn about significant areas that the Innovation and Technology Fund has been supporting recently.

The Associate Deans, Prof. Francis Au, Prof. Francis Lau, Prof. Alfonso Ngan, Prof. George Tham, and Department Heads (or their delegates), Prof. S.C. Wong, Prof. George Huang, Prof. Yuguo Li, Prof. Lawrence Yeung and Prof. Wenping Wang, together with Prof. Ning Xi, Director of ETI, jointed the Dean to welcome Mr. Yang. The presentation began by the Dean sharing the Faculty’s vision and effort in providing inspiring education in the global knowledge-based economy, and advancing the frontiers of knowledge through innovative and high-impact research within and across disciplines.

 

Several research teams who have been engaging with projects funded by ITF showcased their progress and findings to Mr. Yang. The four teams included:

  • "Water and Waste-to-Resource technologies" by Dr. Kaimin Shih, Department of Civil Engineering
  • "The SHIELD – Cyberspace Security" by Dr. K.P. Chow, Department of Computer Science
  • "Physical Internet in Construction" by Prof. George Huang, Department Head of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering
  • "Tissue Engineering" by Dr. Barbara Chan, Department of Mechanical Engineering

Mr. Yang further visited the Advanced Robotics Laboratory and a brief introduction on “Robotics and the Darpa Robotics Challenge” was given by Dr. Chris Roberts from Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Mr. Yang witnessed a demo by the HKU Robot Atlas and was impressed by our capability and advancement of robotics technologies at HKU.
