BEng in Computer Engineering [CE]
BEng in Electronic Engineering [ElecE]
BEng in Electrical Engineering [EE]

4-year Curricula

What is Electrical and Electronic Engineering?

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering offers three bachelor degree programmes. All the programmes offered by the department have been so far fully accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

The Computer Engineering (CE) Programme

The CE programme, established in 1985, is the first such programme in Hong Kong. It covers a wide range of subjects in computer hardware, software and technology applications, such as computer architecture, microprocessors, circuits, operating systems, databases, internet technologies, programming languages, networks, computer graphics and vision. Students also acquire practical skills in computer systems through extensive training, allowing them to adapt easily to the fast changing world in their future career.

The Electronic Engineering (ElecE) Programme

The ElecE programme was evolved from our traditional Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme with a particular emphasis on electronics technology. It has the longest history among similar programmes in Hong Kong and represents a fundamental engineering training applicable to a wide range of areas and applications. This programme has a balanced core and a flexible elective structure designed to equip our graduates in communications technology, electronics and microelectronics, digital signal processing and information technology.

The Electrical Engineering (EE) Programme

The EE programme covers subject areas related to energy systems such as electrical energy conversion, electric power, electric machines, electric traction and building services. Students learn fundamental electrical engineering theories as well as specialized subjects in various disciplines. The programme has a large number of industry-sponsored scholarships at HKU. The knowledge and training provided in this programme equip our students to be electrical engineers of the future, and prepare them for the rapid development in China and the Asia Pacific region. Most graduates of this programme are recruited by railway traction companies, electric power companies, building services and consultant companies.

Programme Structure

The following diagram summarizes the various degree paths you may take through the department of EEE.

Bachelor of Engineering Degree (BEng)

EEE 4-year

Admission to our undergraduate degree programmes is achieved through two main channels. Students with Hong Kong Diploma Secondary Examination (HKDSE) results usually apply to the programmes through the JUPAS admission scheme. Students with other qualifications, as well as overseas and Mainland students may also be admitted through our various Non-JUPAS schemes.

Minor and Double-Degree BEng/BBA

Beyond the degree in Bachelor of Engineering, students may opt for an optional Minor in Business, Economics, Arts, Science, or Social Science taken concurrently with their BEng degrees. Furthermore, advanced students may also choose to pursue a Double Degree in BEng/BBA. Details about admission to either of these programmes can be found from http://www.eee.hku.hk

Career Prospects

EEE graduates are equipped with solid training and professional knowledge. Our past graduates have been recognized throughout the world for their exceptional engineering capability, communication skills, independency and versatility. Graduates of our programmes are expected to take up jobs in government departments, service industries (such as banks, airlines and public utilities like CLP, HK Electrics, etc.),
electrical service industries, commercial organizations, software companies, e-commerce companies,
technology companies and the manufacturing sector.

Their posts include various types of engineers, system architects, and other professional positions.

The curriculums of EEE also provide sound and sufficient foundation, as well as the power of critical thinking for students to pursue higher degrees in this field. Graduates may opt for further studies under the supervision of staff in the EEE Department, or to further their research overseas.
